Here are your 3 candidates:
Corvette (C5 base)
BMW Z4 (E85 3.0L)
Mazda Miata (NC)
Choosing similar years (2006 area) around the same price ($12-18K in good shape). what will OPPO choose and why.
The candidates were chosen specifically because we are OPPOnauts. F new cars! Long live Tavarishcracy (our form of government)
Or just choose anything, I don’t care :] It’s slow today. Thought this would bring good conversation about 3 cars that might show up on our favorite used car lot or used car website around the same price. All are the same type of car I think, would be a tough choice for me since an S2K isn’t an option.

Love the Miata, but I’d go for the C5.
Psychologically it just seems like more of a bargain for the money, and it’s just that much more ridiculous with the big V8 and all. For that money I’d live with the Tupperware interior.

E85! Too tall to fit in a MX-5, and not old enough for the ‘Vette.

each has their own thing.
Id choose the vette if i was going for something high performance. SBC, stout trans, raise all hell with it.
the BMW has the class and style that the other just dont. plus that sweet, sweet BMW made I6.
the miata is going to be the cheapest to maintain, cheapest to run, easiest to use on a day to day basis.

BMW and Mazda are my two favourite brands, and I don’t even like Corvettes too much.
But I choose the C5, it has pop-ups and an LS after all.
It’s made of bin plastics inside, but it sure as hell is going to be fast.

I feel like the C5 is the best value for the money. Stout LS with at least 345 hp, it’s the fastest too. If that matters to you.. Most space too, I think. With Corvettes being as popular as they are, any issues should have an easy fix to them.

The NC Miata handles really well, is reasonable to upgrade (Flyin Miata Targa Package) and is cheap to run, but not fast.
The BMW is great if you don’t want to do anything with it other than scheduled maintenance and still have fun driving.
The Corvette does everything well except fuel economy.
I’d personally go for an early NC Miata and bolt on Flyin’s Targa Package, but that’s just me.

Including fuel economy, actually... at least theoretically. In that you can turn out some incredible numbers but you won’t because you’d ratther use the awesome engine for it’s designed purpose.

This is a good question. There isn’t a clear cut winner in my mind. The NC would be a lot of fun, and sure it’s heavier than the NA or NB but who cares? Driving a convertible that handles like a go kart is a lot of fun, and I say that as someone who drives a 94 Miata about 50% of the time.
That being said, there are definitely days when I wish I had a larger vehicle, or something with a solid roof. The practical side of me looks at that base C5 and thinks it would be more liveable on a daily basis. Also, as someone who does a lot of highway driving, Miatas don’t enjoy going 80mph on a long straight highway. My NA drones at around 4200 rpm when I’m on the highway. I see that C5 and I see a car that could eat up a lot of highway miles without stress.
I vote C5 by a narrow margin over the NC. The BMW wasn’t really a viable candidate in my mind.

But if I had to choose one off the list, Z4 all the way.

Yeah. I’m just speaking relative to a stock NC or a stock 3L Z4, city mileage for a C5 won’t be great. And you’d want to eliminate the skip-shift anyways.

Skip shift doesn’t save gas... It saves taxes lol. Pretty sure the Z4 with the 3L has equal if not worse gas consumption than the Corvette too...
Doing 30mpg with the C5 on the freeway is really easy. But with a Z4? And city driving must be roughly the same I’m sure.

Nah, only idiots drive like that constantly... Or it’s a weekend car and you don’t really use it then...
The Corvette is an awesome cruiser. 6th gear cruises are very relaxing with the nice rumble of the V8 just under 2000rpm.

I think it’s more of a power delivery thing. The Z4's power is sweet and smooth and tractable. Something you only open up when the occasion is right. The C5's power is omnipresent and thunderous and addictive, so you’ll probably find yourself prodding the loud pedal more than you should. A case of YMMV, really.

It’s like my Crown Vic with the exhaust on it. There’s a voice in the back of your head that tells you to make the car go “bwwahh!” when you really shouldn’t. Luckily, I don’t make the car go “bwwahh!” very often.

Yeah, I was like the first couple of weeks owning mine, but when it’s your daily driver, you end up getting used to it and use it like a normal car every day, enjoying it for what it can do on certain days/roads/tracks only. The whole “hmmmrpffff Toooooorque!!!” thing becomes normal very fast...
